CHAIR #1 I 2nd YEAR FURNITURE DESIGN PROJECT
Reinterpreted Chair Design
This design is based on Peter Eisenman's 'Chair #1'.
What appeals to me from Eisenman's chair is the multi-functionality of the chair, which I embraced in my design. However the mass and weight of Eisenman's chair gives it an overly imposing nature and eliminates the portability that is associated with furniture.
With that said, my design borrows the shape of Eisenman's chair while eliminating the mass by using an 'exo-skeleton' that implies Chair #1's form.
The structure uses manually cut laminated plywood which is strong and not obscenely heavy. To further the industrial them brought about by the 'exo-skeleton' aesthetic, I used a black and gold spray paint for colour, finished with exposed wood screws, nuts, bolts and threaded rod.
