MOVE  I  DANCE STUDIO & THEATRE - 2nd YEAR DESIGN PROJECT

Dance Studio with Theatre, Studios, Restaurant, Creche & Offices

The site is at the busy intersetion where Joe Slovo Street meets Hendon Street in Yeoville Town. I used this opportunity to allow the building to facilitate a coming together of the numerous social dynamics that are prevalent in this town.

The building  prides itself on being seen without overly imposing itself on the immediate context. On the lower Ground level with street access from the south of the building, I placed built-in vending stalls (selling crafts) that may be rented out to members of the public that live around Yoeville. There would be a somewhat high class restaurant adjacent to the crafts market allowing an amalgamation of social classes in a calm atmosphere, that wouldnt otherwise interract.

The building expresses the presence of its theatre by allowing the form of the theatre to appear as a strong architectural feature of the building while also acknowledging the slighty slope of the site.

The dance studios are designed to give visual access to pedestrians and drivers in the immediate context - this would ideally allow the stranger to associate themselves to the building and its services through a 'transparency' of program. Massive windows and glazed openings populate the facades of the building to futher offer visual access and visual interraction between those inside and outside the building.
