VERTIGO  I  TABLE LAMP - 2nd YEAR FURNITURE DESIGN PROJECT

Custom Designed Table Lamp

I chose to use a 'cow horn' I purchased from a crafts market in Botswana as the primary element of the table lamp.

Making the horn the source of light would make it the center of the piece. I needed to find a way to hold it up in  a usable position, without taking attention away from it. The design uses MDF boards, carved into relatively organic shapes borrowed from the curve of the horn.

I used the structure generated from these shapes to create ajustable playful positions for the horn (light) to be placed. The horn (light) may be oscillated from its mouth into any position required by the user hence the name 'vertigo lamp'. A place holder is used to keep the horn in place using notches made along the straight edge of the support structure. In the same attitude as the rawness of the horn, the support structure uses the exposed aesthetic of treated MDF board, exposed nuts, bolts and threaded rod.
